We have had a very busy term so far.

We are learning lots of new things in Maths like:

• Different ways to work out addition and subtraction problems
• Naming and describing 2D shapes and 3D shapes
• Learning about pattern
• Recognising money, counting money and working out practical money problems.

We have recently finished some work on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. 

Mrs Morel is so pleased with how we all worked incredibly hard.  Here is an example of a three-page piece of writing done by Florence R.  –  It was really hard for Mrs Morel to choose one as they were ALL fabulous. They really were! Two children’s writing is also on our “Wonder Wall” in school.

Jack’s mother was very cross wasn’t she? She didn’t speak nicely to Jack. Poor Jack!

Our topic “Growing”, is well under way.  We have been exploring the whole world of plants, naming and identifying native trees, plants and, of course flowers! We’ve drawn some flowers from observing them carefully and we have made some out of tissue paper too! Lots of snipping, tearing, pinching and pushing was carried out to produce these beauties.

For our Sparkling Start we went on a nature walk around the grounds of the school and across the road to the park.  We found lots of different kinds of shrubs and trees. We were especially fascinated by the shrub called “Dogwood” – with its lovely red woody stems. We still talk about it!

When we returned we made a list of all the plants.  Next, we drew a map of our journey, using Google Maps and plotted the positions of the trees and plants we saw.

We think the most special tree at the park was the really young Oak Tree.  We think it is about 11 or 12 years old.  It was planted by the village in 2011 to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

We are learning about an Oak tree in a story called “What did the Tree See?” for our Topic work.  The tree starts its life as a tiny acorn and grows into a huge, old tree, over hundreds of years. 

While the seasons come and go, the environment around the tree changes a great deal over time.  We have been looking at what is the same and what is different for the tree through the years.   

It has been good to start some growing of our own too – cress seeds grow into mature plants a lot quicker than oak trees!
